Christopheraaron Deanes (b1972, Saint Louis) contextualizes conversations that challenge perceptions of critical thinking to require heightened connections and improved social engagement. His figurative abstracts offer tension, movement, and a poetic didactic into diverse thinking.  Through contemporary perspectives, he facilitates posture and communication across cultures and experiences as black and brown languages and movement is explored.   He builds upon understandings about race, social civility, and benevolence.

Christopheraaron’s journey is deeply informed by his personal history and community. He has been influenced by a combination of rigorous academic training and diverse experiential learning from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he honed his technical skills and developed a conceptual framework that informs my practice where Deanes obtained his Bachelor's in 1996. Christopheraaron continued his studies in Education through the University of Saint Thomas and the University of Saint Mary’s, where he obtained a Master's in Education, teaching licensure and a Masters in Educational Leadership. Forecast Public Art Works named Deanes as the 2023 Mid-Career Project Nominee | Exposure of Metal Enamel as Public Art. Deanes is the fiscal year 2022 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. He has also received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Minnesota’s State Arts Board as well as several RFPs for public art works in the Twin Cities.  Most recently, receiving the 2025, Next Step grant with the Metropolitan Reginal Arts Council for continuing a robust enamel portfolio for his public art works.

Christopheraaron perpetually is captivated by the interplay of materiality and emotion. His work in enamel is a reflection of this fascination, where the alchemical transformation of raw materials into vibrant, emotive pieces becomes an exploration of identity, history, and the human experience. In his practice, he strives to transcend the traditional boundaries of metal-enamel works, embracing the expressive potential of enamel as a medium for the depiction of the human figure.

Metal enamel, with its rich history and diverse applications, provides a unique canvas upon which Deanes can express his artistic vision. The process begins with steel panels that are coated with cover and ground coating materials. The paintings are designed with a glass frit that is mixed with chemicals allowing for beautiful and various colors that are painted on the panels. This process is a fusion of metal and glass, achieved through high-temperature firing, serving as a metaphor for transformation and resilience, echoing the complexities of life itself.

Deanes continued his practice as an artist and educator for years and started training as an enamellist through a large public art project, in 2009 with the City of Minneapolis. He says, “It has been an honor to learn how to fabricate and create enamel (glass frit also known as vitreous enamel), which fuses glass on metal through high temperatures in a kiln to create amazing images. The vibrant hues, patterns, scraffito, and painting in enamel are special.  I aim to evoke a sense of connection and introspection. The act of layering enamel, much like layering our experiences, invites viewers to engage in a dialogue with the work, encouraging them to reflect on their narratives and the human experience.”

Christopheraaron is particularly drawn to forms, where motifs and adinkra symbols coexist with structures, and figures creating a visual masterpiece.

In his pursuit of innovation, he continuously pushes the boundaries of traditional enameling practices. The integration of enamel painting through painting figures is a unique exploration that isn’t widely being executed in the arts currently.  This process allows him the opportunity to expand his artistic vocabulary. This experimentation is driven by a desire to challenge conventions and provoke thought, encouraging dialogue around the nature of art, craft, people, and the intersection of the three.
